GPS Vehicle Tracking Saves Lives?
We toyed with the idea of changing our slogan to, “FleetMatics: We Save Lives”, but then we realized that may be a bit of a stretch, plus we don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea of what our software is really made for. However, our software did help an injured employee get help!
One of our customers, a natural gas processing and transportation company, installed GPS tracking units on all of their vehicles in order to keep their employees safe. The majority of their pipelines and compressor sites are in extremely remote locations.
One week they received a phone call from Herb, a foreman working at one of their pipeline locations. He was pretty hysterical, and it was difficult to understand what he was saying. While Herb was on the phone, they located him on their FleetMatics screen. As he was coaxed, they determined that there had been an accident. He had an injured hand, and he was bleeding profusely from the neck. They contacted 911 and they dispatched an ambulance. They also located their closest employee and sent him to Herb’s location. By the time the second employee arrived, Herb was being loaded into an ambulance and then taken to a hospital.
Herb had been trying to open a valve on one of the pipelines to check for gas flow. As he opened the valve, nothing happened. When he decided to close the valve, a plug in the pipe suddenly broke loose. As this happened, the pressure in the pipe was so great a pipe connected to the line began to rotate. The pipe struck Herb in the hand. As he fell backwards, he unintentionally opened the valve more. The increased pressure created a force so strong, it blew the pipe connection off, stripping the threads where it was screwed on. Herb was struck in the face, neck and chest. He suffered a shattered bone in his left hand. And he had a cut in an artery in his neck that would not stop bleeding. The company was so grateful that they were able to locate Herb and get him help immediately.
