What Is the State of Your Fleet?
Written by Michael Raia
Government Fleet recently published an article titled “A ‘State of the Fleet Report’ Can Enhance Fleet Image” and it got us thinking about the importance of measuring the success of your fleet.
How do you measure the success of your fleet management efforts?
- Projected fuel spend vs. actual?
- Jobs completed and customer service rating?
- Average idle time?
- Amount of vehicle maintenance time lost?
- Number of driver-incurred traffic violations or incidents?
- Total mileage?
Whatever you consider a key performance indicator for your fleet, make sure you nail it down, gather benchmarks and run a fleet report on a regular basis to see how you’re performing and what adjustments to make. It’s great to produce a report at the end of the year, but by then it’s too late to fix whatever is broken.
Set up a monthly or, at the very least, a quarterly fleet report and look for trends. Are some drivers speeding or idling more than others? Address the problem and watch for improvement. Are you letting maintenance issues go too long before addressing them, leading to more serious repair costs? Set up and honor maintenance reminders and see if the number of serious maintenance issues decrease.
Remember the adage, “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” With the right fleet report, you can measure almost every aspect of your fleet. You just need to come up with a plan and follow it.
