Capital Crane Limited started as a small equipment rental company in 1982 and has grown into a multi-faceted service corporation over the past 30 years. Capital Crane, a division of CGI Holdings, rents equipment needed for any large-scale construction site. Their fleet of almost 500 vehicles consists of all-terrain cranes to trailers to pick-up trucks and is fully winterized to serve clients across Newfoundland and Labrador. 

GPS Tracking Saves the Company Money and Headaches

John Thistle, Fleet Maintenance Coordinator at Capital Crane, wears many hats in his position. So when Tyler King, General Manager at Capital Crane, came to him with information on Fleetmatics’ GPS fleet tracking solution, Thistle saw how the tracking system would make it easier to maintain and service their fleet. By installing a GPS fleet tracking solution, the company planned to revamp maintenance process and save the company on costly repairs or replacements.

“Last year we had to replace two engines due to customer misuse,” notes Thistle. “Our engines cost $85,000 each. Being able to monitor the engine for a small fee each month is a much better idea.”

Fleetmatics is Easy to Use

Fleetmatics was not the first GPS fleet tracking solution Capital Crane had used, but Thistle says it has proven to be much easier to use. “Our old system was a mess—it never got hooked up right and didn’t work right.”

Once Capital Crane had decided to make the switch, Fleetmatics was always there offering support when it came to the process of installing the system on all the units during the harsh winter in Newfoundland. Thistle found the Fleetmatics support team was very responsive and helped overcome the unique installation challenges. “They just knew what to do, “ he says.

Now Thistle keeps Fleetmatics running on six monitors in his office and can see the map view of all three Capital Crane locations and where all of the equipment is at once. “It’s a huge advantage being able to see where all our equipment is, and to know that people aren’t misusing it,” notes Thistle.

He also enjoys that when he does get a call at home after hours, he can access the data on his iPad. “I can login right now and check on a vehicle. That’s an excellent feature,” said Thistle.

Reduced Speeding: When the company first installed Fleetmatics, Thistle would get 200 emails a night notifying him of speeding incidents. Once the drivers figured out they were being monitored, that number went down drastically. He now only gets 10-12 a night. “Speeding isn’t a problem anymore for most of our drivers, and I now know who the chronic offenders are,” says Thistle.

Streamlined Billing: In the past, clients would go over their contracted hours with equipment and would fight overtime charges. “They would want to see proof. Now we can prove it through Fleetmatics. No more time wasted arguing or haggling over email,” says Thistle.

Company Compliance: At first, the drivers were skeptical of being monitored, but according to Thistle, after the managers explained it cuts cost and keeps employees in their jobs, everyone was on board. “We haven’t had a complaint in a month,” says Thistle.

Easy to Learn: Thistle found that once he did a couple rounds of training and played with the solution, he was able to learn the program easily. “It’s just a clean site, a great program. It goes above and beyond what you expect,” says Thistle.
